But that will soon change. Non-violent offenders currently have no choice but to serve 25 percent of their sentence. They’ll now be parole eligible after 25 percent served or 10 years, whichever is less. ....

Dec 18, 2020 The Mississippi State Parole Board is defending one of its members, a Meridian resident, after a state auditorâs report said she was reimbursed more than $47,000 for travel expenses that are not meant to be reimbursable. The Office of the State Auditor said in a report released on Thursday that Mississippi Parole Board member Betty Lou Jones was reimbursed $47,321 for travel expenses that are not reimbursable. Jones This finding is part of a larger report which documents widespread misspending by the Mississippi Department of Corrections from July 1, 2017 to Dec. 31, 2019. Logan Reeves, a spokesperson for the auditor s office, said the report states that there are audit findings of illegal expenditures that made their way to Jones, but that does not mean that those expenditures are criminal. ....

JACKSON ⢠Top administrators received illegal buyouts, improper travel payments and vital records were destroyed by the Mississippi Department of Corrections, according to a scathing audit released Thursday by state auditor Shad White. The audit, requested by current MDOC commissioner Burl Cain, paints a dark picture of the agency during the three years it was under the leadership of former commissioner Pelicia Hall. âThe most disconcerting thing for me is a lot of the misspending came from decisions made at the top of the Department of Corrections and benefitted the folks at the top,â White said. âThe largest dollar amounts went to people at the top.â ....
