Class of 2021 makes history at Heritage Academy

Photo by Brian Petersheim Jr. The first-ever class of Heritage Academy Maricopa graduates was recognized for its perseverance at Thursday night’s commencement. The 25 graduates in blue caps and gowns gathered in the school gymnasium where friends and family sat on bleachers to watch as they accepted their diplomas. To start the ceremony, the graduates were introduced as they walked from behind a black curtain, many stopping before their classmates to do a quick dance move or take a bow before continuing to their seats to cheers from the audience.

Book That Exposes Beijing’s 20-year Persecution of Falun Gong Wins Benjamin Franklin Award On May 14, the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) declared at its award ceremony that the 2021 silver winner of The Bill Fisher Award for Best First Book, Nonfiction, of the Benjamin Franklin Award went to Minghui Publishing for its book  Established in 1983, the IBPA is the largest association in the United States for publishers. Its Benjamin Franklin Award is one of the highest national honors for independent publishers. Michael J. Carson, a senior reviewer of the Midwest Book Review (MBR) Bookwatch, called the book “Impressively informative, exceptionally well organized, and presented.”

William H Freivogel

CAMPUS CONSORTIUM ADVISORY COUNCIL, GRANTEE William H. Freivogel is a professor in the Southern Illinois University School of Journalism, a contributor to St. Louis Public Radio and publisher of the Gateway Journalism Review. Previously, he was director of the journalism school. Before SIU, Freivogel worked 34 years at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, where he was assistant Washington bureau chief and deputy editorial editor. Freivogel graduated from Stanford University, where he was co-editor of The Stanford Daily. After a brief stint with Ralph Nader and a briefer stint at Harvard Law School, he got a job at the Post-Dispatch to earn tuition for a return to law school in two years. Two years turned into 34. While a reporter in St. Louis, he wrote stories that led to reform of the bail bond system. After a mentally ill suspect was killed in the Maplewood police station, Freivogel and a colleague wrote stories that led to prosecutions and reform of the department.
