Beulah Baptist Church was started in 1933, when a handful of Black families from North Carolina migrated to Poughkeepsie for jobs.
Bottoms arrived at the church in 1977 from Louisville, Kentucky. At the time, the church was struggling. It hadn t had a pastor for five years. Get a job that you love and you ll never have to go to work again. For the last almost 30 years, I haven t had to work, Bottoms said, adding that when he started, those first few years were a little challenging.
He credits the success of the church to his faith, the people he works with and his congregants.

Baptist churches became popular among African Americans in the South in part because they offered more membership rights than other denominations. Until the nineteenth century, and unlike the more-elite Episcopal church, Baptist churches routinely offered free and enslaved blacks full membership, and sometimes roles like exhorter or deacon, in their congregations; they restricted leadership roles like elder and pastor to whites. Until 1831, blacks were also free to lead their own separate Baptist congregations, providing a level of autonomy for African American communities nonexistent in most other areas of southern society. After Nat Turner’s rebellion in 1831, white Virginians become fearful that violence would result from assembling black communities, so the General Assembly passed laws restricting enslaved and free blacks from worshipping without white supervision.

FOOD GIVEAWAY: A bagged food giveaway will be 9 to 11 a.m. today at Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., Youngstown. The giveaway is open to the public.
FOOD GIVEAWAY: Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4490 Norquest Blvd., Austintown, will host its food pantry giveaway 2 to 5 p.m. today at the parish for anyone needing assistance.
BAND BOOSTER FUNDRAISER: Girard High School Band Boosters are hosting two fundraisers. The first will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at Niles Nutrition, 815 Youngstown Warren Road, No. 16. For every college basketball team combo, $2 will be donated to the band. The second fundraiser is called March Madness and beginning Monday there will be nightly drawings for tickets that are being sold for $10 each. If your name is called, you get the cash prize for the night it is pulled. Tickets can be purchased on the booster’s event Facebook page or during the Niles Nutrition fundraiser.
