DG, prisons Santosh Upadhyay BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha prisons directorate has issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) for jails to effectively handle emergencies like jailbreaks and escape of prisoners from judicial custody. A special joint drive would be launched by the police and prisons staff to recapture the escapees. The guidelines have been framed in the wake of the escape of two under-trial prisoners (UTPs) from a sub-jail at R.Udayagiri in Gajapati district earlier this month. While one of the UTPs was recaptured, the other one is still on the run. A warder of the sub-jail was suspended for dereliction of duty. Besides, jail authorities had lodged a police complaint against the warder for allegedly helping the two UTPs escape from the jail. Notably, Maoists had attacked R.Udayagiri sub-jail in March 2006 and freed 42 inmates, including some Maoists. ....
BHUBANESWAR: Chief secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra on Monday asked the police and regional transport officers (RTOs) to strictly enforce the traffic related rules. Mohapatra, who reviewed the road safety status in a high level meeting with senior officials of different departments, district collectors and SPs through video conference, laid stress on crackdown against violators of the helmet and over-speeding laws. “District administrations should set targets to reduce accidents. Besides, road safety action plans should be drawn in districts to bring down the fatality rate. Enforcement activities should be intensified,” Mohapatra told the officials in the meeting. The transport department said fatality rate in road accidents in the state came down by nearly 11% in 2020 as compared to 2019. BHUBANESWAR: In a major boost to Odisha’s industrial landscape, the ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Limited (AMNS India) on Thursday signed an MoU with the state government to set up a 12 mtpa integrated steel complex in Kendrapada district with an investment of Rs 50,000 crore. The deal was signed here in presence of chief minister Naveen Patnaik and executive chairman of ArcelorMittal LN Mittal. The development came two days after Mittal met Union steel minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi where discussion about the proposed project was held, sources said. ....
