BHUBANESWAR: The prisons in the state have been decongested by 7.79% in May in the wake of the fresh surge of Covid-19 cases. At least 816 prisoners had tested positive for Covid-19 so far this month.
Against their capacity of 19,824, the state’s 87 jails had 20,150 prisoners on May 1. It has now been brought down to 18,580 as part of the decongestion drive following a Supreme Court directive to the states.
A high-powered committee has been taking various measures to decongest the jails. “Altogether 816 inmates in 33 jails had tested positive for Covid. While 420 of the infected inmates have recovered, the others are undergoing treatment,” director general (prisons and correctional services) Santosh Upadhyay said. He added that a close watch has been kept on overcrowded jails so that the inmates can be shifted to less crowded prisons. Covid: Odisha releases 775 prisoners on bail, parole in fortnight to decongest jails | Bhubaneswar News


BHUBANESWAR: At least 775 prisoners have been released on bail and parole in the state between May 1 and 15 to decongest jails following a Supreme Court order in the wake of the fresh surge in Covid-19 cases.
The population of the state’s 87 jails has come down to 19,707 as on May 15 from 20,482 on May 1.
Director general of police (prisons and correctional services) Santosh Upadhyay held a video-conference with the authorities of the jails on Monday and took stock of the Covid situation.
“The medical officer of Choudwar circle jail in Cuttack has been appointed as the nodal officer to guide the superintendents and medical officers of other jails in taking preventive measures and treating Covid-affected inmates. Since we do not have medical officers in all the prisons, the jail superintendents have been advised to coordinate with the chief district medical officers and other healthcare officials in their localities,” Upadhyay said. ....

BHUBANESWAR: The state prisons directorate has constituted a special squad to conduct raids on jails following allegations of use of mobile phones and narcotics substances by inmates. The authorities strongly suspect nexus of some jail staff with inmates behind such illegal practices.
Allegations of connivance between some jail staff/officers with suppliers of various products are being received from various jails. Repeated instructions have been issued about strict surveillance, inspection of all materials, including prohibited contrabands and cellphones going inside the jails.
