Alachua County virus update shows 28 new cases, more vaccinations

Alachua County added no new deaths and 28 new COVID-19 virus cases to its totals in Friday s state health department report.
The county s fatalities from the virus remained at 275, and the total number of cases now stands at 24,635.
Forty-five patients at Alachua County hospitals had a primary diagnosis of COVID-19 down from 50 the previous day, according to data from Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration. Hospitals had about 17% available capacity.
Statewide, Florida reported 5,306 new cases for a total of 2,233,518.
The University of Florida s coronavirus testing and case dashboard includes positive case totals dating back to March 2020.
Seven students or staff tested positive Wednesday, and there were 227 new campus cases reported in April. Spring semester commencement ceremonies began this week and run through the weekend. ....

Alachua County reports 1 COVID-19 death Thursday
Alachua County reported another coronavirus-related death Thursday, a resident not affiliated with long-term care. Sixteen deaths have been reported this month so far, down from 25 in March.
The county s total virus fatalities are now at 275, 80 of whom were affiliated with long-term care. The residents include at least 111 men and 107 women.
Alachua County also added 43 new cases, for a total of 24,607. Daily case totals so far this month are higher than March’s numbers. The two-week positivity rate for new cases is 3.5%, an increase since last week.
Thursday afternoon, 50 patients at Alachua County hospitals had a primary diagnosis of COVID-19 a decrease since last week, according to data from Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration. Hospitals had about 16.4% available capacity, and overall bed availability has remained stable for the past month. ....

VA to move into new health clinic in St. Johns County in June

The new St. Augustine Community Based Outpatient Clinic just off State Road 207 in St. Augustine is expected to become operational on or about June 27, according to Melanie Thomas, a spokeswoman for the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System.
The facility, at 100 Deerfield Preserve Blvd., will be called the Leo C. Chase Jr. Department of Veterans Affairs Clinic in honor of St. Johns County’s first solider to die in the Vietnam War.
Administrators plan to begin moving items from the temporary clinic at 195 Southpark Blvd. about a week before the opening date.
The new building, which broke ground in November 2019, will offer primary care, physical therapy, mental health services and specialty care to area veterans. ....

Masks optional at Alachua County Public Schools this summer, fall

Alachua County Public Schools has updated its COVID-19 protocols based on the community’s latest virus figures and recommendations from local medical experts.
For the rest of the school year, masks will not be required outdoors on campus for students or adults. Social distancing will be encouraged. Masks still will be required inside and on school buses, except for those with an exemption.
Beginning with the school system’s summer programs, masks will be optional both indoors and outside “unless there is a significant spike in cases or other health/safety issues,” according to information released by the Alachua County Public Schools district Friday.
