Northern Light is a book by Kazim Ali.(Goose Lane Editions) Kazim Ali was the child of South Asian immigrants, who unexpectedly spent years of his childhood in the small Manitoba town of Jenpeg, a town that existed because of the hydroelectric dam nearby. As an adult, he found himself wondering about the town: did it even exist anymore? And if it did, what was it like? These questions sent him on a journey, one that looked at the environmental destruction the dam caused, and the local Pimicikamak community that fought against it. He was in his second year of art school, studying at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, when a friend asked him to submit something to a local alternative paper. His strip about some punks who really, really love pizza caught on, and Pauls drew the strip for five years before taking a break to work on other projects. Now, he s back at it. ....
Conundrum Press launches new YA graphic novel imprint Conundrum Press has launched Emanata, a new young adult graphic novel imprint driven by social equity that will publish work created by comic artists living in Canada. Sarah Sawler, a Quill & Quire contributor, will take on the role of Emanata’s YA acquisitions editor in addition to their current role as Conundrum Press’s marketing manager.
