One incumbent, four newcomers fighting for two seats on Columbia's Board of Education

After a year for school districts across the country that was unlike any in recent history, five Columbia residents are asking voters for a spot on the seven-member Board of Education.
Two seats are up in Tuesday s election, currently filled by Susan Blackburn and Teresa Maledy.
Blackburn, the vice president of the board who was originally elected in 2018, dropped out of this race in January after deciding to not seek another term.
Maledy s term is also set to expire, and she is asking voters to let her keep the seat.
Luke Neal, Katherine Sasser, Aron Saylor and Jeanne Snodgrass are also seeking one of the two school board seats up for election. The two with the highest vote totals when the ballots are tallied will the race. ....

$4 million grant to encourage STEM education in Missouri schools


COLUMBIA - The University of Missouri s Enhancing Missouri’s Instructional Networked Teaching Strategies (eMINTS) National Center received a $3.9 million grant on Monday from the U.S. Department of Education. 
The eMINTS National Center will use the grant to fund a project that will teach computer coding skills to rural schools across Missouri. 
It s a way to get students involved and interested in computer science. We want to introduce students to that world, Carla Chaffin, the grant’s primary investigator and instructional consultant with the eMINTS National Center, said.
Chaffin has worked for over seven years to get this program started for schools in Missouri. ....

News Highlights: $4 million grant will teach computer coding to rural Missouri students | K-12 Education.
The Enhancing Missouri’s Instructional Networked Teaching Strategies, or eMINTS, National Center at MU College of Education educates fifth grade students about computer coding and motivates them to show an interest in STEM.
According to a press release, the United States Department of Education has spent the $ 3.9 million education innovation and research grant that eMINTS uses to generate interest in computer coding and STEM through video games.
eMINTS will prepare and support educators through lesson creation coaching to teach students how to create their own video games. Kansas City Audio-Visual will provide computers to rural Missouri school districts with high percentages of students with financial needs. ....
