Heavy Military Presence as Capitol Prepares for Inauguration Like No Other
WASHINGTON The nation’s capital is preparing for a presidential inauguration like no other in U.S. history, marked by extensive security measures, a large military presence, and pandemic restrictions. President-elect Joe Biden is set to be sworn in on Jan. 20.
Up to 25,000 members of the National Guard coming from all 50 states will be stationed at the Capitol. The number of Guardsmen sent to Washington far exceeds the number of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, which has been reduced to 2,500. National Guardsmen have been permitted to use lethal force in order to support law enforcement in the Capitol and city. ....

After Siege, Will GOP Fight Scandal-Tainted Biden Nominee?

A sprawling series of barbed-wire barricades surround the U.S. Capitol, and so many members of the National Guard are camped out inside they’re sleeping on floors.
While bracing for the possibility of more violence in Washington and beyond, Democrats are urging swift confirmation of President-elect Joe Biden’s national security team.
There’s one obvious problem, however: Before the storming of the Capitol that left five dead and a nation aghast and on edge, Alejandro Mayorkas, Biden’s choice to lead the Department of Homeland Security, was facing one of the toughest confirmation fights of any Biden nominee. And concerns about him among Republicans have not dissipated along with the tear gas. ....

Biden inauguration 'on a war-time footing' over domestic terror threat

Separately, a Chicago-area man was arrested and charged Tuesday after allegedly lodging a direct threat aimed at the inauguration. In a Dec. 29 voice mail message left for a New Jersey House member, Louis Capriotti allegedly warned that Biden would not be allowed to walk into that (expletive) White House on Jan. 20 without a fight.
“We will surround the (expletive) White House and we will kill any (expletive) Democrat that steps on the (expletive) lawn,” he said, the federal complaint alleges.
Federal authorities have briefed lawmakers on similar threats that have been timed to the the inauguration. In a separate FBI briefing this week with local law enforcement officials, Director Christopher Wray warned of the threat to state government buildings and lawmakers. ....

Fortress DC: Capitol locked down a week ahead of inauguration

Fortress DC: Capitol locked down a week ahead of inauguration

Washington, D.C., has many of the looks of a war zone.
In an unprecedented move, the government and private sector have partnered to lock down the district ahead of next week s inauguration.
Normal security precautions for an inauguration entail blocking off streets near several locations a couple of days in advance. This year, neighborhoods near the White House, Capitol Hill, and in between the two famous buildings have transitioned into fenced-in city blocks where residents cannot drive out of apartment building garages or even walk outside without expecting to be questioned by police. ....

Google Backs Biden’s Immigration Efforts and Covers DACA Fees
On Wednesday, following President-elect Joe Biden’s announcement that he would propose immigration legislation to Congress immediately after his inauguration, tech giant Google issued a statement that the company would support these immigration efforts. The company further stated that it would help cover application fees for those seeking lawful work through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) program, an Obama-era policy that shields from deportation hundreds of thousands of people who entered the United States as minor children. ....
