A scene from Blackfriars Theatre s 2019 production of Detroit 67. The pandemic forced Blackfriars and many other small and mid-sized arts organizations to shut down for 14 months, which has had financially devastating results. Responding to mounting complaints from small arts organizations that they have been shut out of public funding for the arts, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello on Monday unveiled a $2 million grant program for the groups.
The program, named JumpstARTS, is financed by federal CARES Act monies and will offer three tiers of grants between $5,000 and $20,000 for eligible organizations, Bello said.
“Many small and mid-sized arts organizations don t have the same level of philanthropic and government support as our larger organizations, yet their impact in the community is undenia ....

Small arts groups could be in line for more funding from Monroe County

CORRECTION 5.11.21: Due to an editing error, the original version of this story mistakenly reported that the legislation in question was introduced by members of the Black and Asian Democratic Caucus. The bill was introduced by Legislator Vince Felder, who is closely aligned with the caucus but is not a member, and supported by the caucus.
Small and medium-sized arts groups, all of which have taken a financial hit during the pandemic, could be in line for a share of $131,000 in grants from Monroe County under new legislation that appears poised to pass the County Legislature this week.
The measure was introduced by Legislator Vince Felder and has support from members of the Legislature’s Black and Asian Democratic Caucus. It has been accepted by the Republican majority for consideration by the full Legislature during its meeting on Tuesday a signal that the bill is likely to be approved. ....

JCC CenterStage takes it outside

JCC CenterStage Artistic Director Ralph Meranto plans to erect a giant tent on the JCC s tennis courts that will act as the facility s theater for the summer and fall. Normally at this time of year, Ralph Meranto, the artistic director at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester’s CenterStage, would be focused on planning upcoming productions for his 300-seat theater. But these aren’t normal times.
Instead, Meranto has been busy securing permits from the Town of Henrietta to erect a giant tent on the center’s outdoor tennis courts, under which he plans to stage shows this summer and fall. ....

If Rochester is a 'City of the Arts,' why don't we fund the arts?

CORRECTION 1.7.21: This article has been updated from its original version to reflect that Rochester has an ordinance that established a percent for art program. That program, however, has been dormant since its adoption in 2007. CITY had initially reported that no such ordinance was on the books.
Every year for as long as anyone can remember, and for as long as available records show, Monroe County adopts a budget that offers crumbs in the way of funding to arts and cultural organizations.
It happened again in December, when legislators approved a $1.2 billion spending plan for 2021 that set aside about one-tenth of a percent roughly $1.4 million for the arts. ....

Her Majesty's Kidnappers | JSTOR Daily

In 1600, thirteen-year-old Thomas Clifton was kidnapped, snatched off the street on his way home from grammar school.
His kidnappers? Two prominent figures in the world of London entertainment: Nathaniel Giles, Master of the Children of the Chapel Royal, and Henry Evans, producer at the Blackfriars Theater. With the kidnapping, they intended to draft Thomas into the vibrant world of Elizabethan theater. They promptly handed the boy a script and threatened him with a beating if he didn’t learn his lines.
Giles and Evans didn’t bother to conceal their crime. When Thomas’ father found them, the kidnappers taunted him, claiming they were well within their rights to seize his son. ....
