Will the return of in-person meetings in Billerica change participation?

As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to drop in Billerica and around the state, local officials begin to move town boards and committees back to in-person meetings, but for some board members, the concern is the possible rollback of accountability.
In March 2020, Gov. Charlie Baker enacted emergency orders allowing municipal bodies to conduct public meetings remotely amid the COVID-19 pandemic. With continuing progress on vaccine distribution in the state, Baker announced Monday those orders would be lifted on Tuesday, June 15.
This move by the Baker Administration threw a small wrench into municipal meetings like the Billerica Memorial High School Building Committee, which had to reschedule their Tuesday meeting due to the lift. The virtual nature of the meeting technically would have violated Open Meetings laws. ....

Billerica resident Annabelle Dionne was recently named a 2021 Creativity Award recipient from the Center for Creative and Performing Arts at Salem State University, and will travel to Berlin this summer to perform on stage.
Dionne is an alumna of the class of 2021 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music with minors in English and history. Her plans after graduation include advanced study in both musicology and ethnomusicology.
The Creativity Awards are presented annually by Salem State’s Center for Creative and Performing Arts to 10, outstanding students in the disciplines of art and design, creative writing, dance, music, and theatre. ....

Billerica's Shawsheen Tech hosts girls in trade conference

Traditionally the trades such as automotive and plumbing have been male-dominated fields, with women slowly making their way into shops and garages over the decades. This has also been the case at Shawsheen Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School, and support for girls in these trades has been bolstered with events like their most recent virtual Massachusetts Girls in Trades conference.
The fourth annual gathering showcased girls in automotive, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, masonry, plumbing, and other male-dominated fields and how female contribution to these shops is not only valuable but critical to the future.
Massachusetts Girls in Trades was launched in 2015 by a partnership of educational, governmental, and union organizations with a shared goal of supporting and encouraging female career and technical education students and alumnae to pursue careers in the union building trades, according to its brochure. ....

Billerica Boy Scouts facilitate America Flag Retirement Ceremony

As dusk fell over Billerica on Tuesday, April 9, members of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 55 made the necessary preparations to retire a special batch of American flags.
The troop often receives various flags for retirement from area residents, but during this particular, Flag Retirement Ceremony there were six to respectfully dispose of, each 15 feet in width and 25 feet long.
The boys worked together to respectfully retire these representations of freedom and liberty.
