Teens missed the cinema the most, new BBFC research reveals

62% of teens said they missed the cinema the most out of all the entertainment activities stopped in lockdown, more so than going to a cafe or restaurant (18%), going to a gig or concert (14%) or visiting a theme park (4%)
92% of teens say they are planning on returning to the cinema once they open and nine in ten (88%) said they felt safe heading back to the cinema
Eight in ten (82%) teens think it’s important for films to have age ratings, to help protect younger children (57%), so they know what a film contains (47%), and so they can make informed decisions (37%)
Teens are most looking forward to watching ....

With British cinemas preparing to reopen on 17 May, the outlook for the sector has never seemed so uncertain. Covid-19 lockdowns have left the biggest chains teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, forcing Cineworld and Odeon’s parent AMC Entertainment Holdings to raise capital and renegotiate their debts to ensure survival. What’s more, the film industry has undergone two key changes over the past year that appear to pose an existential threat to the business model of cinemas.
Firstly, with theatres closed during lockdowns, audiences have shifted towards streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.Secondly, many of the Hollywood studios have cut the traditional 90-day cinema “window”, which allows exhibitors a lengthy period to play films exclusively before they are released on home video. ....

LONDON (Reuters) – Londoner Sam Poch was anticipating the thrill of the big screen lighting up as he waited on Monday to enter a cinema on Leicester Square – a once routine experience that has not been possible for months because of COVID-19 restrictions.
The 31-year-old content producer was among the first arriving to watch a film the old-fashioned way as cinemas in England reopened their doors as part of the latest stage in the government’s phased lockdown relaxation plan.
“I missed it a lot. It’s just the whole experience of going out, sitting down in (front of) the big screen and just the feeling of being in a cinema – it’s just something I’ve missed for the past year,” Poch told Reuters before his screening. ....
