Metagenomic Analyses Used to Identify Changes in Gut Microbiome After Spinal Cord Injury
Using metagenomic sequencing, researchers have identified changes in populations of bacteria and viruses that occur after spinal cord injuries in mice. The novel metagenomic data sets, presented in
mSystems, an open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, provide new information on the taxonomy and function of diverse microbes, including viruses. This information may help to better predict how spinal cord injury-induced changes in the microbiome influence systemic and neurological outcomes after traumatic spinal cord injury.
“This is the first study that has applied metagenomics to characterize gut dysbiosis after spinal cord injury,” said principal study investigator Phillip Popovich, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Neuroscience and Executive Director of the Belford Center for Spinal Cord Injury at the Ohio State University (OSU). ....

COLUMBUS, Ohio A significant discovery has been found by researchers at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and College of Medicine that is said to potentially save money in costly medical bills and save lives.
“I got paralyzed in a motorcycle accident when I was 19,” said Dr. Sasha Rabchevsky who has dedicated his life to spinal cord injury research.
Dr. Rabchevsky currently works at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
“When I saw the publication come out I got giddy. I said, ‘finally, this has some teeth.’” ....

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Research led by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and College of Medicine found that the widely prescribed pain-relief drug gabapentin can prevent harmful structural changes in the injured spinal cords of mice, and also block cardiovascular changes and immune suppression caused by spinal cord injury.
Gabapentin is often prescribed as a treatment for pain, but if it is given early after injury - before symptoms develop - it can also limit structural changes in nerve cells. We show that these benefits remain even one month after stopping gabapentin treatment in spinal injured mice. We believe that gabapentin could be repurposed as a prophylactic therap ....
