Nasrallah defies Lebanese state, says he will import Iranian oil

BEIRUT: In a speech seen as an act of defiance against the Lebanese state and the US, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Wednesday insisted that Lebanon should be “negotiating with Iran to buy gasoline and diesel with the Lebanese currency if Lebanon’s shortages persist.”
Seemingly unconcerned about the possibility that this might result in international sanctions being imposed on Lebanon, he said, during a televised speech: “Shipments of fuel will arrive at Beirut’s port, and let the state prevent their access to Lebanon.”
Nasrallah’s speech came hours after reports that the Iraqi government has agreed to double a previous promise to supply Lebanon with oil, from 500,000 to 1 million tons. His comments provoked varying reactions among the Lebanese public. Some were surprised and some rejected the idea of buying oil from Iran, given the risk of sanctions. Washington still has sanctions in place on Iran and has designated the military and political wings of ....

Experts Don't Foresee Larger Hezbollah Involvement Amid Israel-Lebanon Border Tensions - New Delhi Times

Rockets were fired from Lebanon towards Israel on Wednesday, prompting Israel to launch artillery strikes at targets in Lebanon.
It was the third time rockets had been fired from Lebanon toward Israel since clashes between Israel and Palestinians militants erupted earlier this month. However, experts do not expect Hezbollah, the militant group that dominates power in Lebanon, to take actions to further increase regional tensions.
Israeli officials have indicated they believe a small Palestinian faction was behind the rocket barrages from Lebanon and not Hezbollah, which has access to advanced rockets.
“It is highly unlikely (albeit never impossible) that tensions at the Lebanese-Israeli borders will escalate enough to warrant or cause direct confrontations between Hezbollah and the Israeli Defense Forces,” Christophe Abi-Nassif, the director of the Lebanon Program at the Middle East Institute (MEI), told VOA. ....

Lebanese in war of words over Palestine action

BEIRUT: Lebanon’s response to the violence in Gaza and its relationship with Palestine is the subject of angry debate after rockets were fired from southern Lebanon toward Israeli settlements.
Former MP Nadim Gemayel warned that “Lebanon is neither a military base nor a missile platform for Palestinian factions or Iranian militias.”
He demanded that “the state and security services act quickly and strike with an iron fist, for Lebanon today cannot afford to repeat the experience of the 60s.”
Gemayel said the “number one cause today is the Lebanese cause only.”
MP Bilal Abdallah said that “Lebanon is facing an economic collapse and a vacuum in its political power, and the Palestine issue should not be put at the forefront.” ....
