Scottish election 2021: How the unintended consequences of bad campaigns decided the outcome – Brian Monteith

Submitting.
To sum up, the accused was allowed to deflect, distract and deceive (or alternatively reveal downright ignorance of facts or process) and all because of the incompetence of the prosecution’s advocates’ strategy from the get-go.
Of course the prosecution sees it differently. The Scottish Conservative leadership will claim they halted the Sturgeon juggernaut and deprived the SNP of a mandate to hold a second referendum. Well, only if you accept the Ross-Davidson definition of how a mandate might be obtained.
The Scottish government has no legal competency in holding a referendum that can force a larger body (of which it forms only eight per cent) to allow it to secede. ....

Pro-UK activists spend heavily to head off SNP majority at Holyrood

Last modified on Wed 5 May 2021 08.50 EDT
Anti-independence campaigners have spent tens of thousands of pounds in the past week calling for tactical voting to prevent the Scottish National party winning a Holyrood majority.
At least five pro-UK groups have bought newspaper adverts, mobile ad vans and electronic billboard sites, and numerous adverts on Facebook, urging voters to support election candidates most likely to beat an SNP candidate.
Scotland Matters, a group co-founded by Prof Hugh Pennington, a bacteriologist in Aberdeen who rose to prominence during E coli food poisoning outbreaks in the 1990s, registered with the Electoral Commission so it can spend up to £75,000 on tactical voting adverts during the election. ....

Concerns over 'dark money' being used to fund adverts for Unionist Facebook groups

CONCERNS have been raised that “dark money” is being used to fund adverts for Unionist Facebook groups, an investigation by The Ferret and The Free Press for today’s Sunday National has found.
A UK Government adviser and a senior figure at the Adam Smith Institute (ASI) think tank is among the figures behind the funding, along with two men who campaigned against Jeremy Corbyn through social media groups and who are now targeting the SNP.
The SNP described the Tories and dark money as “familiar partners”.
So-called dark money is funding raised for political campaigning through non-profit organisations that do not have to provide the identity of the source of those funds. ....

The cloud of 'dark money' looming over the Holyrood election

By
Billy Briggs and Sean Rankin
Two people who campaigned against Jeremy Corbyn through opaque social media groups are now running Facebook campaigns targeting the SNP
A UK Government adviser and senior figure at the Adam Smith Institute (ASI) has funded adverts for a campaign group called Businesses For The Union, prompting concerns over so-called “dark money” political activity in Scotland’s election campaign.
An investigation by The Ferret and The Free Press also found that two people who campaigned against Jeremy Corbyn through opaque social media groups are now running Facebook campaigns targeting the SNP.
Although the above political activism is perfectly legal, campaigners have raised concerns over a lack of transparency over funding and called for new legislation to combat the influence of so-called dark money in politics. ....
