PRESTONPANS is eager to celebrate the success of its world champion boxer Josh Taylor. Danielle Murphy, Josh’s fiancée, said she was looking to put plans in place for an open-top bus parade, so her partner could show off his prized championship belts to his fans, but is awaiting confirmation from East Lothian Council. Meanwhile, Prestonpans Community Council meets on June 8 to discuss commemorating Josh’s success, but has said that any celebrations will follow coronavirus restrictions. Brian Weddell, community council chairman, said: “We are absolutely delighted for Josh and his family after his win – given he is Prestonpans born and bred, this is an amazing achievement for East Lothian. ....
A BARBER has won his fight to keep a security shutter installed on the advice of police after an appeal to Scottish Ministers. Alan Mulholland spent more than £5,000 putting in the shutter at the Prestonpans branch of his Eskquire barber shops after they were targeted by vandals last year. But when he applied for retrospective planning permission for security changes, including CCTV cameras and lighting, East Lothian Council granted it but included a condition ordering him to remove the shutter because his shop was in a Category C listed building. The decision was branded a “travesty” by Prestonpans Community Council, which backed Mr Mulholland, and overturned by the council’s Local Review Body in March. ....
POLICE resources will not be reduced in Prestonpans, community leaders have been reassured. A recent meeting of Preston Seton Gosford community and police partnership (CAPP) was told a community police officer was being redeployed to a new role. Brian Weddell, Prestonpans Community Council chair, contacted Chief Inspector Neil Mitchell, East Lothian’s local area commander, expressing his concerns following the meeting, with the officer’s redeployment coming at the same time as a “significant increase in anti-social behaviour”. PCs Walker Nixon and Fiona Cunningham are the community police officers for Preston Seton and Gosford (PSG). PC Cunningham works part-time. But after five years, PC Nixon is to move to a new role covering schools across Musselburgh, Tranent and Prestonpans, a role suited to his skillset, said Ch Insp Mitchell. ....
