Over the last year I’ve been following Craig Roh into a deep dive into the sublime subtleties of pass rushing. Not that you need all of that to appreciate fine defensive end play. As a fan it’s quite obvious when a player has mastered the art of coordinating hand movement, hip flexion, foot spacing and angle, and shoulder depth from the trail they leave. One moment there’s some people standing up around a football-holding guy, and then suddenly this beautiful dance has become a jumbled mosh pit and the quarterback is screaming.

Jim Harbaugh surprised some folks this offseason when he dismissed Don Brown, the architect of Michigan’s vaunted, yet sometimes too stubborn pressure defense.
The Wolverines’ head coach leaned on his brother, NFL head coach John Harbaugh, for help and landed a Baltimore Ravens assistant. And while Mike Macdonald entered the college ranks with virtually no experience coordinating a defense, the transition to a different style of play has started.

Nate Johnson got a crystal ball from 24/7’s Sam Webb and a FutureCast from Rivals’s EJ Holland recently. Johnson ran a 10.49 100-meter-dash at a meet last weekend per his coach. For reference, Tyrone Wheatley put up a 10.46 at Michigan, Denard’s personal best was 10.44, and the mathematics of the Universal Standard Model of Quarterback Physics breaks down at around 10.42.

Coach Oz took a shot at State over having no players drafted:
Ryan Osborn is an analyst, and DEs/OLBs coach. He was hired as analyst, but does coach on field. Shaun Nua is coaching only DTs.
According to redshirt junior defensive end Taylor Upshaw, his position group is working more with Osborn than with Nua at this juncture. The reality is Nua is more like a D-tackles coach right now,” Upshaw said. “Coach Osborn is really our main guy. But I’m happy (Nua) is back and I’m happy with the defensive coordinator and my coach – the younger guy. They understand what it’s like being in the position we’re in. It’s a blessing.”

With the recruiting dead period potentially ending May 31, Michigan is beginning to set up official visits with 2022 prospects.
One of those recruits is Indianapolis Brebeuf Jesuit four-star defensive end Joe Strickland, who is scheduled to visit the weekend of June 19th.
In-person recruiting has been banned since March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee has recommended the dead period transition to a “quiet period” on June 1 so schools can host recruits on campus and conduct camps, according to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd.
