Restrictions on voting continue to make their way through the Arizona Legislature, as similar bills adopted by other states have caused a national furor. Some 22 Arizona bills would place new restrictions on voting, including changes in the mail-in voting system used by roughly 80% of voters. Similar changes enacted in Georgia have triggered a national debate, along with sharp criticism by some corporations â including Atlanta-based Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines. The criticism by Delta of the Georgia voting changes prompted state lawmakers to revoke millions of dollarsâ worth of tax breaks enjoyed by the hometown air carrier. Both parties have sent out a host of fundraising appeals using apocalyptic language about the effects of such voting law changes. Democrats have portrayed them as an attempt to suppress the votes of young people and minority voters â who typically have much lower turnout rates but are also more likely to vote for Democrats. In the wake of demonstrations at the Arizona Capitol, Rim Country lawmakers are backing an effort to impose much tougher penalties on people who block streets, assault police officers or point laser beams at officers during a demonstration. Another bill would impose tough penalties on anyone who damages statues. Rep. Brenda Barton (R-Payson) and Rep. Walt Blackman (R-Show Low) were among the half dozen sponsors of both bills. Barton and Blackman represent District 6 in the state House, a district that runs from the Grand Canyon into the White Mountains, including all of Rim Country. The two bills â HB 2309 and HB 2552 â have been making their way through various committees, but have not yet come to a vote on the floor. ....
Republicans and Democrats continue to battle over whether to restrict or broaden voting in Arizona, with the Republicans in firm control of both houses. House members Brenda Barton and Walt Blackman â who represent the White Mountains and Rim Country â have both co-sponsored a resolution rejecting any effort by the U.S. Congress to make it easier to register to vote and cast mail-in ballots on the grounds controlling elections remains the responsibility of the states. A host of other bills in the Arizona Legislature could impose sweeping changes on elections in Arizona â including all but banning mail-in voting altogether. Many of those are likely to die in committee without ever making it to the floor of the House and Senate. ....
(MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) Barton relayed this message during her courtesy call to Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. shortly after she presented her letter of credentials at the DFA office in Pasay City on Wednesday, Feb. 24. During their talks, Barton and Locsin discussed WFP’s work in the Philippines, which began in 1968, but was formally re-established in 2006 following the Philippine government’s request to WFP to support the ongoing peace process in Mindanao at that time. “My pleasure and honor to meet @teddyboylocsin and to work in close partnership to achieve Zero Hunger in Philippines,” the new WFP representative to the Philippines said on her Twitter account. ....
