Negative impacts of the industrial agricultural under discussion By Tarryn-Leigh Solomons Share Cape Town - Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) executive director Francesca de Gasparis says the current approach to food security, in the face of the intensifying climate crisis, will do more harm than good on the continent. Speaking during a virtual briefing focused on the real-life examples of the negative impacts of the Industrial Agricultural model in Africa and the alternatives, De Gasparis said African farmers need support to find communal solutions that increase climate resilience, rather than the top-down profit-driven industrial-scale farming systems proposed. On behalf of faith leaders, the institute wrote an open letter to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation appealing to the foundation to reconsider its approach to “food security and food production” and to stop their push for “input-intensive crop” monoculture ....

Cabinet appoints critic as member of nuclear regulator board Share Cape Town - The government has responded to civil society demands for a public representative on the National Nuclear Regulatorâs (NNR) board by appointing one of its most vocal critics, Koeberg Alert Alliance (KAA) spokesperson Peter Becker. Spokesperson Phumla Williams said the Cabinet approval of the appointment of Becker and three others would be subject to the verification of qualifications and the relevant clearance. The others appointed are attorney Vuyiswa Miya, National Union of Miners energy sector co-ordinator Khangela Baloyi and a former special adviser to previous Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson, Allan Taylor. ....
Tomorrow will be four years since the Western Cape High Court found the government’s one-trillion rand nuclear deal and associated energy procurement processes to be “illegal and unconstitutional”. The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute says the deal would have bankrupted the country. Safcei’s Executive Director, Francesca de Gasparis, says it is however concerning that on the fourth anniversary of the ruling against the corrupt nuclear deal, the SA government has begun to again pursue nuclear energy ambitions. She says if government is serious about President Ramaphosa’s statement last Thursday at the climate summit, then as much as possible of their energy planning and resourcing need to go into renewable energy sources. ....
