Alton receives money for Brown Street work The Telegraph FacebookTwitterEmail ALTON The city has received $600,000 for the Phase 1 Brown Street Improvements Project. The work will consist of asphalt resurfacing and ADA sidewalk accessibility improvements on Brown Street between Main Street and Worden Avenue. Alton was awarded a $450,000 grant by the East-West Gateway Council of Governments in May 2020 for the work. The Madison County Board approved additional funds of $150,000 in January to help with the $826,500 project. Engineering and design plans are currently being developed with work expected to begin in Fall 2022. “This project further demonstrates this administration’s commitment to improving quality of life issues for the citizens of Alton,” said Mayor Brant Walker. “By bringing federal funds to our community, the city is able to support our businesses and contractors while promoting jobs for our local union members.” ....

Also, the list of Mayor Walker’s Community Policing programs is far too numerous to mention here. ....

Cougars make Alton their official home Dylan Suttles, [email protected] FacebookTwitterEmail 3of3 ALTON The Central Illinois Cougars were welcomed Friday to the 1st MidAmercia Soccer Complex at Gordon Moore Park by Alton Mayor Brant Walker and Alton Parks and Recreation Director Michael Haynes. “I couldn’t be happier,” Walker said. “Having the Cougars play in Alton is another affordable amenity that is family friendly and will also bring more people to our region.” Kinney Myles, owner and head coach for the Carlinville-based team, started it in 1999, playing home games in Carlinville and Springfield areas. The Cougars are part of the Hidden Gems Football League and play in the Ruby Division, winning three league championships and played in three other championship games. ....

However, I am writing in response to his insulting statement recently released accusing me of spreading misinformation and questioning my intelligence regarding the home rule issue Alton could face following the 2020 census. I have previously stated my concern that Alton may lose its home rule status if the census data shows we have declined in population below 25,000 residents. As a candidate for mayor, I view this as a critical issue that may present a tipping point for Alton if not addressed with strong leadership and a positive outlook for our community. ....
