Bay of Plenty Times
Bay of Plenty man Craig Crowley will take part in a heavy metal showdown in Feilding later this week when he climbs into the cab of a 13-tonne digger to represent the Bay at a national competition.
Crowley is one of 12 champions from around New Zealand who will test their excavator skills at the CCNZ CablePrice National Excavator Operator Competition.
These range from tests of real-world skills such as traversing a trench or lifting and relocating a manhole cover, to crowd-pleasing tests of precision such as popping a champagne bottle using an excavator s bucket. ....

"Race-Fishing" Book Covers Is More Than Just Problematic

First published in 2009,
The Blue-Spangled Blue poises itself as an immersive sci-fi epic filled with an enormous cast of characters. On the cover was seemingly the protagonist of this ensemble: a beautiful dark-skinned Black girl with braids, standing in front of a deep indigo background and starry outline of a man. An absolutely beautiful cover, promising what appeared to be a sci-fi tale of a Black heroine embarking on an adventure amongst the cosmos or finding a memorable, star-crossed romance.
Unfortunately, however … that ended up not being the case. A few hours after Bowles revealed this cover, criticism popped up online over what many felt was a misrepresentation of the actual content of the story. The Black woman on the cover was in fact ....

What Alexander Hamilton's deep connections to slavery reveal about the need for reparations today

A life entwined with slavery
By Hamilton’s time in pre-revolutionary America, wealthy Northerners like him not only benefited from and propagated slavery, but enjoyed centuries of generational wealth built on the labor and lives of enslaved people.
Hamilton’s father-in-law had among the largest slaveholdings in the North. His mother-in-law was the daughter of Johannes Van Rensselaer and Angelica Livingston, both members of two of the largest slaveholding families in the North.
Hamilton’s early years in the Caribbean were also marked by slavery. He was born on the British West Indies island of Nevis in the 1750s into a household that held slaves. By age 11, he was working as a clerk for Beekman & Cruger, a firm based in New York that traded enslaved people and other commodities – like food products and wood for shipbuilding – that fed the slave economies. ....

INTERVIEW: Xio Axelrod's The Girl With Stars In Her Eyes

Some of my favorite films have been those that followed that bright-eyed, bushy-tailed feeling of first diving into the music industry, like
Almost Famous. And some of my favorite books have followed the rise and fall of fictional rock stars, like
Daisy Jones and The Six.
But unfortunately, it has still been rare to find a book that gives a refreshing new perspective on navigating the wild world of rock and roll from the eyes of a character that looks like me, which can be frustrating, because it’s not like PoC don’t exist in these spaces there’s Fefe Dobson, System of a Down, X-Ray Spex, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and so many more whose stories deserve equal merit to everyone else’s. ....
