Second wave of COVID-19 sweeps away Rongali Bihu spirit

GUWAHATI: The second wave of COVID-19 has robbed the Rongali Bihu of its gaiety this year too. The Bihu celebrations had to be skipped last year because of the outbreak of the same virus. This year the celebration is a low-key affair.
The number of visitors in most of the Bihutolis is much less when compared to bygone years. Ahead of the festival, the State Health Department on April 9, 2021 issued SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for Bihu celebrations. The SOPs created a debate among the government and the Bihu committees.
The Bihu committees were strictly directed to adhere to COVID-19 protocols like the use of masks, thermal test, sanitization of Bihutolis etc. Most of the Bihu committees across the State demanded certain relaxations in the SOPs. In Guwahati, most of the Bihu programmes were completed before mid-night. ....

GUWAHATI: Bihu organising committees in Assam are up in arms against the state government after it had come up with certain curbs given the Covid pandemic.
The government had on Friday issued a standard operating procedure (SOP), making it mandatory for the Bihu committees across the state to obtain prior permission for the programmes and wind them up by 11 pm every night.
The Bihu committees are miffed that the government did not take them into confidence before “unilaterally” issuing the SOP. They have already staged a protest in Guwahati demanding the relaxation of the restrictions.
Kailash Nath Sarma, who is the advisor to Brihattar Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani Samannay Raksha Samiti, said the government could not force the SOP on the Bihu organisers. ....

Former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said he has not wavered from his stand against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
He is among four MLAs of the regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) who have been denied ticket for the three-phase Assam election starting March 27.
“I stand firmly with the anti-CAA forces,” Mr. Mahanta said after arriving in Guwahati on March 6 from New Delhi, where he had undergone treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
The two-time Chief Minister is the founder-president of the AGP, a minor ally of the BJP in the State. The party got 26 seats following the seat-sharing agreement with the BJP and other allies in New Delhi on March 5. ....

GUWAHATI: An erstwhile faction of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is being revived in Assam by some former AGP leaders who stand opposed to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
The AGP (Progressive) or AGP-P, which got assimilated into the parent party along with some other splinter factions of the party in 2008, is likely to contest the upcoming Assembly elections.
The AGP-P was the brainchild of two-time former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. He had floated it in September 2005 in protest against his expulsion by the party.
Despite being the AGP’s founder-president, he has remained cornered in the AGP for the past few years. Speculations are rife the AGP will not field him this election. He has been representing the Barhampur seat since 1985. He is undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. ....
