While there was no let-up in COVID-related deaths in SPSR Nellore district that reported eight fatalities in the last 24 hours, Prakasam also reported nine deaths taking the combined toll in South Coastal Andhra to 1,673.
New cases
The active case tally crossed the 31,000-mark in the region as 1,673 persons in SPSR Nellore district and 1,130 in Prakasam contracted the disease, according to a health bulletin released by the State government. ....

At a time when coronavirus patients are suffering owing to paucity of oxygen at hospitals, the Prakasam police saved the day by repairing a tanker carrying oxygen which was stranded after it developed a snag on Monday.
The truck carrying 22 tonnes of oxygen from Visakhapatnam to the Government General Hospital in Ongole developed a snag at Narnivaripalem, near Bollapalli toll plaza, on the Chennai-Kolkata national highway in Prakasam district. ....

‘Violators will be booked under Disaster Management Act, 2005’
Prakasam Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal has exhorted the people not to venture out of their homes as the night curfew has been imposed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. as a measure to scheck the spread of coronavirus infection.
As part of the night curfew implementation, the ASP, along with police officers, toured the city on two-wheeler and asked the people to stay indoors. The SP warned that the violators would be booked under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and also under the relevant sections of the IPC. ....

Safety measures explained at awareness meet
Prakasam Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal on Saturday called upon police personnel to gear up for the most challenging environment as the number of coronavirus cases went up exponentially across the district.
With the second wave of COVID-19 wreaking havoc, Mr. Kaushal asked them to strictly follow ‘Dasa Sutralu’ (10 norms) while policing. It was the personnel at the grassroots level who bore the brunt of the viral disease earlier while enforcing the curbs to combat the disease. Hundreds of them had contracted the infection and some of them succumbed to it. ....

Amid the poll boycott call by the main opposition Telugu Desam Party, elections to the Mandal and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies were held in a peaceful manner in south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Thursday.
About 51% of the voters exercised their franchise in the polls held in Nellore and Prakasam districts, in strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols in the wake of spurt in cases in the region.
In Nellore district, 51.87% of 13.38 lakh voters exercised their franchise. The polling percentage in Prakasam district was put at 50.88%, the officials said.
Braving the scorching heat, people, wearing face masks and maintaining social distance, waited in queues at polling stations as the health workers scanned their body temperature with thermal scanners. The voters were also provided with hand sanitiser to clean their hands before they were allowed to the booths. ....
