It’s challenging to be gracious to someone who publicly and privately disparaged my work, but I’m going to put my ego aside and acknowledge that the retirement of Jay Greene of Crain’s Detroit Business is a loss to Michigan health care journalism.
Greene has been covering health care for so long that I suspect Hippocrates was one of his sources. He’s spent the last 13 years at Crain’s Detroit, and before that covered nonprofits for Crain’s Modern Healthcare, an industry bible. Greene’s institutional health care knowledge is unrivaled, not only in Michigan but across the country. He’s a stickler for detail, his reporting painstakingly accurate. ....

Deadline Detroit | Covid hospital patients drop by half in Michigan since mid-April; Detroit-area numbers also down sharply

The number of adults with Covid infections in Michigan hospitals has declined by more than 2,000 over the past four weeks.
State data posted Thursday shows 2,158 hospitalized patients with confirmed or suspected coronavirus down 48% from April 14, when 4,187 beds held virus victims. 
Intensive care units, which had 864 Covid cases in mid-April, were treating 613 as of Thursday afternoon s tally from the Department of Health and Human Services. That s a 29% drop.
Deadline Detroit compared figures for April 14 with the latest update. Weekly data shows the number of in-patients with confirmed or suspected Covid, the number in intensive care and overall bed occupancy rates at every Michigan hospital. ....

Still, Michigan hospitalizations are also down slightly compared to the beginning of the week.
But deaths a lagging factor are still rising, with the state now averaging 58 deaths a day.
The state has reported 1,047 confirmed COVID-19 deaths so far in April, the first time since January that deaths have exceeded a 1,000 in a month.
Since Jan. 1, a total of 4,081 Michigan residents have died of confirmed coronavirus.

Michigan coronavirus data for Wednesday, April 21: 56 counties trending down in case counts

Fifty-six of Michigan’s 83 counties have reported fewer new coronavirus cases in the past seven days compared to the previous week, and 65 counties have seen a drop in their coronavirus positivity rates during that time.
Statewide, the daily average of new cases declined 14% from April 7-13 to April 14-20, while the seven-day positivity rate is now below 15%.
That said, Michigan continues to rank No. 1 in the country for per-capita coronavirus cases, and hospitalizations and deaths which are lagging factors continue to rise.
