The Pickerington Local School District says masks will be optional for students and staff heading into the 2021-22 school year.
The announcement comes a day after the Ohio Department of Health strongly recommended all unvaccinated students and staff wear masks indoors when classes resume in the fall.
Last week, the American Academy of Pediatrics released guidance saying everyone, including those who are fully vaccinated, wears a mask in the classroom.
During a board of education meeting on Monday, Pickerington Superintendent Dr. Chris Briggs said a large portion of his staff is vaccinated and the district is establishing an environment that is ‘mask welcome’ for unvaccinated students and staff alike.”

PICKERINGTON - The annual Picktown Palooza will have a new location this year as it returns from a one-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The festival will be from July 15 through July 17 at Pickerington High School Central and Opportunity Way. The official address is 300 Opportunity Way. The main reason is just due to the growth of the event, Pangor Productions President Chris Stein said. We ve literally outgrown the area we ve been in since 2017. This new space is going to be just incredible with regards to the amount of space we have. The other great thing about it is all the parking is going to be onsite. Back where we ve been traditionally it was all offsite.
LANCASTER - Although voter turnout in the county was low, many issues seeking renewal passed in the Fairfield County primary election.
School districts fared well in the primary election Tuesday, with two of the three on the Fairfield County ballot passing.
The Berne Union Local School District s 2% income tax levy renewal passed by a clear margin, with 383 (67.43%) votes for and 185 (32.57%) votes against.
Jon Parker, the district superintendent, said it was a great night for the district. The levy wasn t set to expire until 2024, but it s great that the voters decided to renew it, so now we don t have to worry about it, he said.
