Mobile Wants to Give City Employees COVID Bonuses
Mobile, Ala., Mayor Sandy Stimpson has proposed that the city copy Birmingham’s plan to give its full-time and part-time city employees a $5,000 and $2,500 bonus, respectively, for working during the coronavirus pandemic.

(TNS) Mobile, Ala., Mayor Sandy Stimpson on Tuesday urged the city to copy Birmingham and give a $5,000 bonus to every full-time city employee, and $2,500 to part-time workers.
Stimpson says the money would come from federal relief for COVID-19. The Mobile city council could vote on the plan sometime after June 29. Birmingham city leaders have already endorsed their plan, and the bonus checks are expected to go out to 3,500 full-time employees this month. ....

“We’ll start with a Mardi Gras scenario,” Excelsior Band leader Hosea London said Thursday afternoon, “and see where we go from there.”
Just like that, the music flowed and a new season of Brown Bag concerts got under way. The wind was driving whitecaps out on Mobile Bay, so this performance had been moved from the usual spot down near the shore to the upper lawn at Daphne’s May Day Park. But the move was no bad thing: The trees provided enough shelter to keep the music from being blown sideways, there was sun to counterbalance the chill in the air, and soap bubbles from a child’s birthday party in a nearby pavilion swirled all around. ....

About six years ago, the Rev. Tony Pope began preaching the gospel from his front yard in Mobile. He then started taking his sermons to some of the city’s more crime-ridden streets. More recently, he can be spotted outside one the city’s Walmart stores, “spreading peace” through scripture.
He’s also taken his microphone and sound system to downtown Mobile, where lengthy sermons are conducted from Bienville Square or Cathedral Square parks. ....

Not long ago, Andy Scott was working in his shop at the corner of St. Anthony and St. Lawrence streets in downtown Mobile when an older man pulled up and asked him, “Are you the sign painter?” Turns out, the guy had been a sign painter in New Orleans. He’d heard about a young man in Mobile with a relatively new business, New Hand Signs, and sought him out. ....
