When Patrick Walters happened across a golden opportunity, the Bassmaster Elite Series pro from Summerville, S.C., stepped on the gas and sacked up a five-bass limit of 24 pounds to lead day 1 of the Harris Chain Bassmaster Southern Open in Florida.
Walters, who opened his 2021 season with a 4th-place finish in the Elite tournament at the St. Johns River, said he typically approaches Florida events by moving fast in practice to locate productive areas and then slowing down with methodical tournament execution.

Following is some pattern information for the 2nd- through 5th-place finishes at the recent Bass Pro Tour REDCREST championship event at Alabama s Lake Eufaula.
2nd: Michael Neal
Michael Neal, still seeking his first victory at the sport s top level, logged the 11th Top-5 finish of his career. He caught 10 fish for 31-04 in the finals, trailing winner Dustin Connell by a little more than 5 1/2 pounds.
He used a ChatterBait to catch shallow fish from pockets on the Qualifying Round days, then switched to brushpiles with a jerkbait and a spinnerbait in the Knockout and Championship rounds. ....

Virginia pro David Dudley says that in some tournament seasons, 80 percent of the fish he weighs in may come on spinning rods.
“My baitcasters have dust on them,” he joked.
