'I have no intentions of walking away' - Niall Scully's motivation after slow ascent to the top


The 2011 All-Ireland minor football final was in its dying minutes when Niall Scully was thrown into the tumult. Colman Kennedy had goaled for Tipperary just minutes earlier and there would be no way back for Dessie Farrell’s scorching favourites.
That Dublin team of all talents included Ciarán Kilkenny, Jack McCaffrey and Paul Mannion who, within two years, were starting an All-Ireland senior final.
But even though the younger Scully savoured delayed minor gratification in 2012, his senior ascent was far less certain. Which may explain why, four Celtic Crosses and now one All Star later, he has no intention of abandoning his Dublin dream any year soon. ....

Paul Mannion, Paddy Andrews and Michael Darragh Macauley all departed from the Dublin set-up in recent months, with Andrews and Macauley both announcing their retirement from inter-county football.
Mannion has opted out of the panel “for now” according to a statement released by Dublin GAA in the wake of his exit. ....

It was the summer of 2016 when Niall Scully was beginning to think that his Dublin career was to end at under-21 level. 
With minor and under-21 All-Ireland medals under the guidance of Dessie Farrell, it was a better career than many, but watching on as team-mates such as Jack McCaffrey, Brian Fenton, Davy Byrne, Paul Mannion and John Small progressed through to the senior ranks made him wonder if he missed the boat. 
While the quintet were in the midst of a season that would lead to All-Ireland success after Mayo were seen off in a replay, Scully was playing for McBride s in Chicago, his second summer in the Windy City.  ....

They were a few weeks out from a Munster semi-final against Tipperary, working with a squad backboned by classy minor hurlers fresh from winning back-to-back provincial crowns.
