Cleave Frink, the longtime activist who rallied against drugs in Melbourne, pushed for bettering police relations, and who helped desegregate lunch counters in dime-store dinettes during the civil rights movement, has died.
He was 78.
Frink, who was also a former president of the South Brevard NAACP and a minister of Greater Life Fellowship Ministries, died Tuesday after a short illness, family members said.
Frink s contributions were discussed during Tuesday s Melbourne City Council meeting as word of his death circulated. There was a moment of silence for him. ....

Melbourne should not penalize those trying to help the hungry

This week, Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey hosted a workshop on homelessness in the city.  Addressing the crisis of homelessness is absolutely critical across our county, but the initial steps taken at the meeting were deeply disappointing.  Instead of focusing on necessary care for our neighbors who are struggling, the Council’s first action was to move forward an ordinance that would criminalize certain acts of asking for help and offering help to those in need on local streets, medians and intersections.
For example, the proposed ordinance would result in up to a $500 fine or 60 days in jail if you give a bottle of water through your car window to a pregnant woman, elderly veteran, child, or anyone holding a sign while your car is stopped at an intersection. Both the giver, and the recipient, would face these penalties.   ....

Melbourne s homeless population continues to rise even though City Hall officials and a multitude of community partners have never put forth more effort or resources to tackle the problem, City Manager Shannon Lewis notes.
The number of citizen and business complaints regarding the homeless, homeless camps and panhandling has increased over the past year, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic began, Lewis said in a memo to the Melbourne City Council. ....

Eau Gallie public-private parking garage pursued for nine-story Unscripted hotel project
Melbourne officials will pursue funding and construction of a five-story public-private parking garage next to the Eau Gallie Civic Center as part of an ambitious nine-story luxury hotel project.
Northboro Builders, which is under contract to buy the Foosaner Art Museum, wants to replace that building with a 180-room hotel featuring a rooftop restaurant, pool and bar, along with 7,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space.
The brand: Unscripted, a boutique urban brand offered by Dream Hotel Group of New York, said Larry Jarnes, Northboro Builders president and CEO.
“We now have seven or eight restaurants and bars right in downtown Eau Gallie, with more coming. We’re 2.5 miles from the airport. This’ll be a facility that people will literally come and vacation to, and make Eau Gallie a destination, for both business and pleasure,  Jarnes told the Melbourne City ....

Melbourne Police Lt. Brian Hart is wearing a body camera that will now be a part of the M.P.D. A demonstration was held at Melbourne City Hall.
Body cams for police officers applauded
I want to command Police Chief David Gillespie and the leadership in Melbourne for their decision to equip all their officers with body cams. I especially like the feature that activates the camera when the lights and siren of the police car are turned on.
This will lead to an additional administrative burden along with requests for the footage that these cameras produce. The Melbourne department has already recognized this aspect of their plan and is taking steps to address it. ....
