Given their significant impact in Florida, putting small businesses at the forefront of pandemic relief is vital and even more so for minority- and women-owned enterprises. We are more than one year into this pandemic which has devastated the lives of millions of Americans and tens of millions around the world. Since this started last year, we have been told how this has affected business and industry; in particular, we have been asked to help small businesses. Yet, what do we see when we turn on TV? One hundred percent coverage of the pandemic; bottles of serum whirling around assembly lines, lines of cars with people waiting to get their shots, and needles pressing into the arms of patients.

A demonstration was held at Melbourne City Hall. Body cams for police officers applauded I want to command Police Chief David Gillespie and the leadership in Melbourne for their decision to equip all their officers with body cams. I especially like the feature that activates the camera when the lights and siren of the police car are turned on. This will lead to an additional administrative burden along with requests for the footage that these cameras produce. The Melbourne department has already recognized this aspect of their plan and is taking steps to address it.

UPDATE: Macomb to Get New Fire Chief; New City Council Member Also Expected Soon

Rich Egger/file photo Macomb firefighter Dan Meyer began learning a new job on Monday, January 25. He is being trained to become the city s next fire chief. The city council agreed to promote Meyer to the position of transitional chief at an annual salary of more than $73,572, which was the pay for the deputy fire chief before that position was eliminated. Meyer will learn the budget process and be trained in the other duties of the chief. Mayor Mike Inman said the plan is to hire Meyer as chief when current Chief Rick Driskell retires at the end of August.
