Print This year’s presidential election cycle drew the highest voter turnout despite a pandemic that had the county’s Registrar of Voters adapting to social distancing and a dramatic increase in mail-in ballots. To make voting possible for all registered voters who wanted to cast a ballot this fall, state officials decided every registered voter would receive an absentee ballot that could be mailed back for free or returned at numerous locations before Election Day. Drop-off spots included local libraries in the weeks leading up to Nov. 3. There was also four days of on-site voting at many community venues. ....
In the sea of new phrases that emerged in 2020, one that has crept in has been “an ad-hoc committee put together by La Jolla Community Planning Association President Diane Kane.” These ad-hoc committees, featuring representatives of community groups across La Jolla, operate under LJCPA with specific purviews: a Village Visioning Committee, a Shores Planned District Ordinance review board and a new one to examine La Jolla coastal view corridors that are being blocked by development. Not to be confused with a subcommittee, which continually reviews projects and makes recommendations that LJCPA can later ratify, an ad-hoc committee addresses a specific issue and then disbands. ....
If 2020 has proved anything, it’s that La Jollans don’t lose their fighting spirit. As the world battled the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, locals hopped online or otherwise did what they could for various causes whether it be neighborhood character, racial justice or adapting to ever-changing public health restrictions to keep their businesses open. San Diego County’s cumulative cases stood at 145,779 as of Dec. 27, with more than 1,400 related deaths. ....
Barbara Bry does not plan to fade away. The La Jolla resident and former San Diego City Council member and mayoral candidate recently jolted the local political world when she announced she was backing a recall of Councilwoman Jennifer Campbell, who was recently elected council president by her colleagues. Bry said she isn’t leading the recall effort, which was informally launched months ago by the organization Save San Diego Neighborhoods. But at least for the moment, she has become the face of the movement, giving television interviews and writing an opinion column about why she believes Campbell should be removed from office. ....
Dr. Those supporting the recall include environmental groups, advocates for aggressive vacation rental regulations and leaders of most of the community groups in District 2, which includes the city’s beach communities. The anti-recall campaign says Campbell, a Democrat, has been a strong advocate for progressive issues and a good leader who is willing to tackle controversial issues and look out for the whole city – not just a vocal minority. They also say a recall would be a divisive and unwarranted distraction at a time when the city is facing the COVID-19 pandemic, a budget crisis and several other key issues. ....
