La Jolla's Joe LaCava sworn in as District 1 City Council member


With a 23 percentage point lead in the vote count the day after the Nov. 3 election, it appears La Jolla resident Joe LaCava will win the San Diego City Council seat representing District 1. He says he’s ready to get to work.
Guided by the words of environmental innovator Hal Harvey, “Respect science, respect nature, respect each other,” LaCava said he would focus on working with his council colleagues, being responsive to his district and “getting things done.”
He began by expressing his gratitude to his immediate family members for their support, his “immigrant parents” for instilling values of hard work in him, Bry for providing a smooth transition, the departing council members and mayor and the residents of District 1. ....

The playgrounds at the La Jolla Recreation Center are open again after being closed briefly as a result of new regional coronavirus restrictions imposed by the state.
“County guidelines were to close the playgrounds [Dec. 7], so we did put signage up,” San Diego Parks & Recreation Department area manager Rosalia Castruita told the La Jolla Community Recreation Group during its Dec. 9 meeting.
But after a state update Dec. 9 announcing that playgrounds could open, “we were told to remove the signage, so we followed that directive,” Castruita said. ....

San Diego's new City Council promises action on pandemic and climate change -


SAN DIEGO (CNS) – San Diego’s 73rd City Council was sworn in this morning alongside new Mayor Todd Gloria, bringing a Democratic supermajority to the council chambers.
Departing councilmembers Georgette Gomez, Barbara Bry, Chris Ward, Mark Kersey and Scott Sherman offered thanks to the citizens of San Diego and words of advice to incoming councilmembers Joe LaCava, Stephen Whitburn, Marni von Wilpert, Raul Campillo and Sean Elo-Rivera as the city faces one of the most tumultuous periods in its history.
The 73rd City Council must contend with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and all the physical, economic and budgetary issues it presents the city. Other major items before the council, which now sits at an 8-1 Democrat advantage, include the city’s Climate Action Plan and battling climate change, homelessness and rising housing prices, the cleanup of the Tijuana River Basin, social and racial justice and large-scale projects such as Pure Water. ....

The La Jolla Parks & Beaches advisory group is lending its support to the Barber Tract Neighborhood Association in its quest to eliminate wood and charcoal fires on beaches in its area.
LJP&B voted during its Dec. 7 meeting to write a letter to the city of San Diego requesting a ban on all wood and charcoal fires and permitting only propane-fueled fires at Barber Tract beaches, including Marine Street Beach, where the issue seems most prevalent. ....
