Lawmakers slam LSU response to sexual misconduct report

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Female state lawmakers on Wednesday lambasted Louisiana State University’s response to a scathing report about its handling of sexual misconduct complaints, calling the university’s disciplinary decisions weak and insulting to students whose abuse allegations were mishandled.
The legislators singled out for blistering criticism LSU’s decision to briefly suspend rather than fire two employees for years of botched responses to claims of sexual harassment, domestic violence and rape.
“I’m kind of just dumbfounded. I’m sad. I’m disgusted. I’m so disappointed in LSU, and I continue to be disappointed with the response that we’re getting right now,” said Rep. Paula Davis, a Baton Rouge Republican. “It’s just not enough.” ....

Louisiana lawmakers approve $27.6 million in education spending

(The Center Square) â Louisiana lawmakers in both chambers on Thursday approved $27.6 million in education spending that goes beyond the main state allocation for schools, though several members said they were disappointed school districts werenât spending more of the available dollars.
During the late 1990s, the Legislature used money from a state settlement with tobacco companies to create the Education Excellence Fund. The money is divided into two pots.
Some goes into investment accounts the systems control. While 34 systems have exhausted all of their share, 35 systems have a collective balance of $25.7 million, state education officials said.
The Legislature and Treasury make additional dollars available each year. School systems present plans to the state education department about how they plan to spend their share. ....
