Holly F. Reynolds has advocated for better treatment of animals in the state of Louisiana since 1950. She founded the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society in 1979, and today it is the oldest humane organization and only no-kill shelter in the city of Baton Rouge. She also led the effort to establish the state s first dog-fighting laws, making it a felony. During the pandemic, her foundation donated $5,000 to pets in need. ....
Sen Katrina Jackson (D) Monroe A bill mandating trauma training for all public-school teachers, counselors, and administrators passed unanimously through House Education. Monroe Senator Katrina Jackson’s bill requires instruction on how to recognize childhood trauma and address their needs. “Trauma’s one of the leading causes in our state, and in the rural areas, of children, not optimizing their experience in their learning. And so, I believe it will protect students not only at school but at home,” said Jackson. Jackson said the one-hour class will be taught during in-service days for instructors so it will not be an unfunded mandate on education. Baton Rouge Representative Barbara Freiberg questioned if one hour was enough to instruct such a class. Jackson expressed she hopes class time will be extended in the future when they can dedicate funding for the class. Freiberg praised Jackson’s efforts. ....

(AP) - Lawmakers on a Louisiana House committee Tuesday narrowly refused to advance a proposal to prohibit transgender athletes from competing on girls’ sports teams in schools. By a one-vote margin, the House Education Committee rejected the bill by Houma Republican Rep. Beryl Amedee. Five lawmakers on the panel voted for the measure, while six voted against it. Two Republicans joined Democrats on the committee in opposing the proposal. That vote isn’t certain to end the debate for the legislative session, however. A similar proposal by Sen. Beth Mizell, the Senate’s second-ranking Republican, awaits debate on the Senate floor after winning the backing of that chamber’s education committee. ....
