(5 out of 5 stars) Although I m a fan of the Christmas recordings that Sir David Willcocks abd Stephen Cleobury did with the King s College Choir, this little gem of a classical Christmas album has its own unexpected beauties. I discovered this Christmas album in the collection of a family member, and was struck by its transcendent loveliness. It s a joyful, uplifting, and exquisite celebration of Christmas, and specifically the Reason for the Season, and it s a skilful blend of the old and the new. It s a perfect blend of instrumental and vocal, lively and tender moments, and James Galway s flute wraps around you like a rich velvety fur coat. ....
(5 out of 5 stars) I was looking for a mainly instrumental CD to augment my expanding Christmas collection, and I chose this one because of the wide variety of songs it contained. It has Leroy Anderson s definitive arrangement of Sleigh Ride, two medleys, and songs like Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, March of the Toys, Dream Pantomine from Hansel & Gretel, and Mozart s Sleigh Ride, which make this mixture a little different than the average Christmas CD. This album is not completely all instrumental, as there are a few choral pieces ( The Little Drummer Boy, Carol of the Bells, and Silent Night ). The choir does not overwhelm the orchestra, though, and these selections blend in well with the rest. The songs were originally recorded in the late 1950s, but the background hiss is hardly noticeable, if at all present. ....
The Nutcracker KSL broadcast This strange year s strange holiday season might feel a little less strange with some familiar entertainment as part of it. While the closure of Salt Lake County arts venues forced the cancellation of Ballet West s beloved annual production of The Nutcracker, those who have made it a tradition for all or part of its 65-year history can still get a dose thanks to a first-ever broadcast presentation. In partnership with KSL-TV, Ballet West will present The Nutcracker commercial-free on three nights Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 beginning at 5:30 p.m. MT, and subsequently available to stream on KSL s free app. Those who grew up with the story in any of its many forms know and love E.T.A. Hoffman s story of a young girl who befriends a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve to battle the Mouse King. The familiar, beautiful music of Tchaikovsky is set to the legendary choreography of Ballet West co-founder William Christensen. ....

A Choir Tries to Keep Its Christmas Tradition Alive The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, spent months rehearsing for its Christmas Eve service, which is broadcast worldwide.
