(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Eight candidates are vying for three seats on the St. Joseph school board Tuesday.
Each of the seats, which will be decided during Buchanan County’s April 6 general municipal election, carries a three-year term.
One of the first tasks for the newly-elected school board will be navigating the aftermath of voters rejecting or accepting the $107 million dollar school bond issue also up for a vote on April 6. Another area that will garner early attention from the board is the continued struggle of protecting in-person learning and the people who go to school every day.
The two candidates running for re-election are Lute Atieh and Larry Koch. The third current board member running, Richard Gehring, was appointed following the resignation of former board president Sam Wright.

A new study from the Josiah Bartlett Center for Public Policy, a New Hampshire-based free-market think tank, finds Educational Freedom Accounts (EFAs) could save Granite State taxpayers more than $6.5 million the first two years.
The study of the impact of legislation, like New Hampshire s SB130, also found EFA s would produce $30.6 million in higher lifetime earnings for students while generating nearly $13 million in economic benefits for New Hampshire.

EFAs allow families to take the state portion of the school funding that would have been spent on their children and invest it in other educational choices, from sending kids to a public school in a different district to public charters to private education and even homeschooling. Around 30 percent of Granite State students would be eligible for an EFA under the Senate

During a Zoom meeting hosted by the Josiah Bartlett Center for Public Center, NH Gov. Chris Sununu celebrated the Granite State s success attracting people and businesses from high-tax states, but he has a message for new arrivals: Leave your politics at the border.
