New tugboat helps modernize Parker Towing Co. s fleet
When Capt. Larry Norris pilots a marine vessel down river with barges strung out in front of his tug, he knows the river can put up a fight. You have hours and hours of sheer boredom. It s what you get used to, Norris said Friday during the christening of Parker Towing Co. s new tug, the Jared Phillips. But, if you ve never been over here, it s a fight. You have to fight against the bottom of the river. If the river comes up and falls out real quick, the bottom will change up. Between Oliver Lock and Fosters, the turns are real sharp. Once you get below that, they start to lengthen out, but up here they are real sharp.

Tuscaloosa, Ala.-based Parker Towing Company will be featured on National Geographic’s new show “Breaking Bobby Bones” Sunday, June 20, at 10 p.m. Eastern (9 p.m. Central).
Each episode of the show features radio and TV personality Bobby Bones traveling to a different part of the United States to “find people with unique jobs, skills, hobbies and abilities,” according to the network. In attempting to learn their trades, Bones explores “the triumphs and tragedies that made these heroes who they are today,” according to National Geographic.
For the episode featuring Parker Towing, Bones will join a towboat crew, learning some of what it takes to move barges on the nation’s waterways and, in the process, getting to know the crew members.
