GTP Headlines Greece Wins 2021 European Heritage Award for Plaka Bridge Restoration Project


Greece has been honored at the
European Heritage Awards 2021, the EU intiative for cultural heritage organized by the European Commission and Europa Nostra, for the restoration project of the landmark
Plaka Bridge in Epirus.
The Plaka Bridge is a single arched stone-bridge, the largest and most impressive of its kind in Epirus. In February 2015, during a heavy storm that caused the river to overflow, a significant part of the main arch and the east pier of the bridge collapsed.

The project has restored the bridge to its former beauty and underlined its considerable value to both the tangible and intangible values of the natural landscape in which it is found. ....

Annual Heritage Awards winners announced
The annual Heritage Awards were held at Little Creatures Brewery last night, Wednesday 12 May, celebrating local efforts to restore, retain or interpret heritage places in the region.
Held by the Geelong and Region Members Branch of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), in conjunction with the City of Greater Geelong, the Heritage Awards have been held every year since 2009.
Awards are presented in the following categories:
Restoration of a Heritage Place
Creative Reuse of a Heritage Place
New Work/Development within a Heritage Area
Sustainability and Greening of a Heritage Place
Public access to a Heritage Place ....

Vicarage turned 'party house' returned to its former heritage glory


The renovation, which involved stripping the house back to its framing, re-lining, re-wiring, re-plumbing and re-roofing, has made it a finalist in the 2021 Canterbury Heritage Awards in the “domestic saved and restored” category.
Michael Barker said the awards were not just about architecture but also about the preservation of social history, which he and Brigitte had emphasised in their stewardship of the home, which has a category two listing with Pouhere Taonga Heritage New Zealand.

Brigitte Barker did not want traditional chandeliers, and opted for this modern version.
The Barkers have been in the region for five generations, with the fruit company being Geraldine’s largest employer. ....

Cottage renovated by former owner's great-great-great-niece, four generations later


The builder was Rene Voets, with input by conservation consultant architect Tony Ussher. The cottage has a Category 2 heritage listing with Pouhere Taonga Heritage New Zealand.
Its extensive renovation has made it a finalist in the 2021 Canterbury Heritage Awards, in the “domestic saved and restored” category.
The house is at the beginning of the Bridle Path, the track taken by early settlers over the Port Hills to Christchurch. The trek from Lyttelton took about four to five hours in the mid-19th century.
