Celebrating pioneering Kansas artist Birger Sandzén on 150th birthday
LINDSBORG Birger Sandzén left his mark on Lindsborg. Not only is the city s art gallery named after him, but one of his works remains on public display at the Lindsborg post office.
This year, the Sandzén Memorial Gallery will celebrate Sandzén s 150th birthday with an exhibition of his work and the publication of a new book.
The post office contains a Section of Fine Arts mural titled “Smoky River,” painted by Sandzén in 1938.
Smoky River was painted close to Lindsborg, with the style that he was well known for with strong brush strokes. At the time this work was completed, Sandzén was 67 years old. ....

National Recognition for 12 Illinois Sites Added to National Register of Historic Places in 2020
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) today announced 12 Illinois sites were added to the National Register of Historic Places during 2020, including one National Historic Landmark.
“Thanks to the advocacy and support of historic preservationists from throughout the state, and thanks to the work of our staff at the IDNR State Historic Preservation Office, these additions to the National Register help tell the story of Illinois,” said IDNR Director Colleen Callahan.
The places recognized are located across Illinois and include a 150-year old farmstead, the home of the Chicago Cubs, and four historic districts that, when combined, include more than 700 significant properties. ....

Factories don t attract much notice these days.
They re usually simple boxes consisting of concrete walls, space-frame roofs, standard windows (if necessary) and maybe a dash of color to gin up at least a little visual excitement.
Utilitarian factory design goes back a long way. (Think of all those unadorned brick and stone mills from the 19th century.) But there was a time when industrial architecture was quite beautiful.
In the Twin Cities, what might be called the golden age of factory architecture extended from about 1900 to the mid-1930s. During that period, even the humblest factories were often dressed up in styles ranging from Classical Revival to Arts and Crafts to Art Deco. ....

Old Leominster High nominated for National Register of Historic Places

Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin has announced that the Massachusetts Historical Commission approved the former Leominster High School for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places at a recent meeting.
The nomination will be submitted to the National Register of Historic Places at the National Park Service for final consideration and designation.
“The Massachusetts Historical Commission is dedicated to preserving the Commonwealth’s rich historic, architectural, archaeological, and cultural resources,” Galvin said. “The former Leominster High School building is a landmark in the city and its conversion to affordable housing supported by historic tax credits gives it a new life and a new value to the community.” ....
