LOOSE ENDS 5/28: Class Day × By Pam Hersh My favorite Princeton University graduation event is neither the commencement nor the baccalaureate ceremony, but rather a celebration that is a bit more obscure – and in a class all by itself. It is Class Day, which features no pomp and circumstance, just a lot of soul. A tradition that dates to 1856 and takes place the day before Princeton’s Commencement, Class Day is a lighthearted ceremony organized by seniors to recognize the achievements of their class. Over the years, I have stalked the proceedings (located – in my time – on Cannon Green behind Nassau Hall) by standing on the sidelines outside of the roped seating for members of the graduating class. The ceremonies I have seen featured speakers from very diverse backgrounds and professions, but all sharing a talent for evoking laughter, while dispensing memorable and profound advice about life post- Princeton. ....

LOOSE ENDS 5/14: Community Police Initiative × By Pam Hersh The bulletin board in Small World Coffee on Witherspoon Street is actually an art exhibit of index cards. The theme of the pop art is: What Have You Learned to Appreciate Because of COVID? The responses include sentiments we all have felt this year: hugs, kisses, grandma and grandpa, siblings, streaming services, in-person school, live concerts, classical music, jazz music, grocery store clerks, baristas, and, of course, bathrooms. I would add one more wonky thing that I never would have said prior to COVID – data. More specifically, I now treasure decision-making based on data and how one small data-induced step on my part can lead to one giant step forward for everyone. ....
Loose Ends: Andrea Goldsmith × By Pam Hersh Andrea Goldsmith’s resume is intimidating – so much so that I almost persuaded myself to tune out rather than tune into a Princeton University Center for Jewish Life virtual lecture that featured her as a speaker. Just like I try to exercise my body on a regular basis, I also try to stay in mental shape (particularly during these mind-numbing, brain-foggy pandemic times) by ingesting a regular diet of academic lectures. So I clicked into the Zoom lecture and prepared to feel inadequate. Dr. Goldsmith, who formerly was an electrical engineering professor at Stanford University, is the recently appointed Princeton University dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. ....
