I know any list like this, by its nature, is going to inspire debate, maybe even anger, but rarely agreement. (and in all fairness, a couple of pleasant surprises, giving the list some legitimacy. More on that later.) Rolling Stone Magazine did another one of their top 100 lists; this time the category was top 100 Motown singles, for the anniversary, in 1961 of the Marvelette s Please Mr. Postman becoming Motown s first number one hit song. That led to the list of the 100 greatest Motown hits.. Motown Records is about as homegrown as you can get, beginning with Berry Gordy, Jr and its founding in the late 1950 s. If you can get over there, the Hitsville USA Museum is very good. I d rather hear pop songs than look at dinosaur bones, anytime. ....
Intensity can dissolve distance. Hopes were always high for Hymn, Lolita Chakrabartiâs new play, not least because it starred Adrian Lester and Danny Sapani. Then Covid snatched it from the stage and its chances seemed sadly diminished. Could a drama about intimacy and trust be convincing when actors have to stand two metres apart? Blanche McIntyreâs tremendous livestreamed production proves that it can. It is the layering â of sound, sight, words, dance, gesture â that gives this two-hander its depth charge. Chakrabarti wanted to explore something she had seen among friends and extended family, but never on stage: a love between men which was neither physical nor romantic, but subtle, complicated, often uncertain. Her plot â which draws on a racist incident involving Lester, to whom she is married â deserves to keep its secrets, but nothing is ruined by saying they hinge on a meeting between two middle-aged men and involve the loyalties and ....
