The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation New Zealand is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr James Fingleton, BM, PhD, FRACP, as Medical Director.
Dr Fingleton is a respiratory physician and Clinical Leader for Respiratory at Wellington Regional Hospital, where he runs the severe asthma service.
He is also a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Otago and Honorary Research Associate at Victoria University of Wellington.
Dr Fingleton’s research interests focus on the treatment of airways disease, particularly severe asthma and COPD, with a particular interest in personalised medicine. He has been a member of the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board since last year, and as Medical Director he will take on the Board Chair role. ....

MIL-OSI New Zealand: Health – New NZ COPD Guidelines timely for those most at risk from COVID-19

The first-ever New Zealand COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Guidelines have been published in the New Zealand Medical Journal today, providing a national framework for diagnosis and management of COPD in a New Zealand context.
Affecting more than 15% of New Zealand adults over the age of 45, and encompassing emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and chronic airflow obstruction, COPD is irreversible and usually progressive. People with COPD are more at risk to severe illness from contracting COVID-19, as listed on the Ministry of Health’s website of severe underlying medical conditions.
The guidelines have been developed by the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation’s (ARFNZ) working group of respiratory health experts led by Dr Stuart Jones from Middlemore Hospital and Professor Bob Hancox from the University of Otago, with the goal of improving diagnosis, and laying out clear recommendations for assessment and man ....
