Flavio D photography Last March, Quennette “Queenie” Santos’s mother, Izora Kindell, succumbed to renal failure after a tough battle against kidney and lung cancer. She was 92. Much like her daughter, who herself had been diagnosed with stage four bilateral breast cancer five years earlier, “Momma” wore a smile on her face throughout her treatment and kept the doors to her home in Harbor Point open to the children who passed through the Walter Denney Youth Center next door. ....
Tome Barros Tome Barros, Director of Training for Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport, has joined the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester (BGCD). Barros grew up in Dorchester and learned to play basketball at BGCD. Before coming to Northeastern University, Barros served as director of the “Train the Trainer” program for NBA China, providing curriculum, skill development training and high-quality coaching to more than 2,000 coaches. He also served as the Basketball Operations Coordinator for the National Basketball Association in Madrid, Spain, where he collaborated with basketball federations and key stakeholders to grow the game of basketball across Europe and the Middle East. ....

Boston-based New Balance Athletics, Inc. has footwear manufacturing facilities in Boston, Lawrence and Central Maine (Norway, Norridgewock, and Skowhegan). The grants will address the increasing inequities related to COVID-19 across education, technology access, and food security in communities dealing with hybrid or fully remote teaching models. ....

Bill Forry photo The news radiated across the neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon and, for so many of us, it was a gut punch: Bruce Seals, the Louisiana native who had made the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester his professional home since 1990 and from there helped raise thousands of our kids, was dead at age 67. One of the many indignities of this cruel year is that most of us didn’t know that Bruce was suffering from cancer. Bob Scannell, the head of the Boys and Girls Club who worked alongside Bruce for three decades at the Deer Street campus, was stunned that his friend and colleague was suddenly gone. How could it be? ....
