Since COVID-19 began, it’s spread across the United States and economic strain has heightened, possibly placing more Berkeley residents into housing insecurity. According to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle, homelessness in Alameda County experienced a 63% increase from 2017 to 2019. Such housing insecurity appears to have only deepened as the pandemic continues to deprive job security from residents. According to California’s Employment Development Department, since November 2020, 52,200 Californians lost their jobs, causing the state’s unemployment to increase by 0.9% and overall unemployment to reach 9% by December. ....

Alameda County food workers now eligible for COVID-19 vaccines Berkeley grocery store and convenience store workers are now eligible for COVID-19 vaccines. On Monday, the city of Berkeley announced it was expanding eligibility for these workers, along with in-person educators and childcare workers, to make appointments at the Curative vaccination site in Albany. By Tuesday, all available appointment slots had been filled, but the city said more appointments could become available due to cancellations or added supplies. Meanwhile, food and agriculture workers (including restaurant workers) in Alameda County are eligible to schedule vaccine appointments at the newly opened Oakland Coliseum vaccination site through the California Department of Public Health’s COVID-19 vaccination website. ....

Photo: Pete Rosos UC Berkeley reported 184 COVID-19 cases in the last week, hitting its peak during the pandemic and asking all students in campus housing to quarantine as cases continue to spread primarily among undergraduate students. Daily cases had mostly been in the single digits leading up to Jan. 26, but they jumped to 42 cases among undergraduates alone on Friday. There were two other cases among graduate students and staff, making a total of 44 cases that day. On Sunday, there were another 34 cases and 100% were undergraduates. The total number of cases in the last week amounts to about 25% of cases at the university since April, when Cal reported its first case. It has since had 731 cases of COVID-19 among its community members to date. ....
