Telecom companies shop for spectrum

Representational Image  Telecom companies have bid for more than the street expected them to shelve for radio airwaves in the auction held by the Government of India on March 1 & 2. The government raked in Rs 77,800 crore vs its expectation of Rs 45,000 crore.  Out of the total 2308.8 MHz on the block bids came for 855.6 MHz of the spectrum. Lion s share in this spectrum buyout is Reliance Jio s which bought 488.35 MHz of spectrum for Rs 57100 cr, this was 44% higher than required for renewal. Bharti Airtel on other hand has 104% higher than required for renewal with bidding for 355.45 MHz for Rs 18,700 cr. This gives Airtel the most formidable spectrum holdings in the country,” the company said in a statement.

This gives Airtel the most formidable spectrum holdings in the country. Airtel has now secured pan India foot print of Sub GHz spectrum that will help improve its deep indoor and in building coverage in every urban town, the company said. Airtel said the spectrum acquired through the latest auction will also help improve its coverage in villages by offering the superior experience to an additional 90 million customers in India.
