Local residents deal with gas shortage


OXFORD — In the days following the cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline, residents all around North Carolina have been forced to deal with mounting shortages at gas stations.
The Valero gas station on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Oxford was one of the locations on Wednesday that still had some fuel to spare, but manager-in-training Patricia Holman said the situation was anything but serene.
“We got a truck in [on Wednesday] surprisingly enough,” Holman said. “It happened out of the blue and we had no clue that we were even going to get anything. It’s really chaotic right now. I tried to help an elderly customer earlier in the day and there were two guys just about to brawl.” ....

He shouted unintelligibly as he fired off round after round, and then, before police could arrive, he had killed himself, leaving in his wake eight dead and at least seven wounded.
On Thursday night, in a terrifyingly quick spasm of violence, Indianapolis, Indiana, faced its third mass shooting since the start of the year. And a nation already weary from a pandemic grappled with yet another bloody rampage, only weeks after back-to-back mass shootings last month at spas in the Atlanta area and at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. ....
