A proposed timeline to jumpstart construction of affordable workforce housing on a 3.2-acre parcel in Bahama Village met with some resistance Thursday, May 6, at a meeting of the Bahama Village Redevelopment Advisory Committee. Key West strategic plan consultant Elisa Levy presented the proposed timeline as well as other development options for the project to BVRAC members to get their input. City officials are trying to speed the process of finding a developer in order to meet an April 2022 deadline for a state grant that could fund a large part of the cost. The City of Key West is hosting a public workshop to further gather community input on the Bahama Village 3.2 acres set aside for affordable housing. This workshop is vital to gather the input on how the immediate residents and businesses feel the development will affect them. The workshop begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, and lasts until 8. It will be held in the Frederick Douglass Gym, 111 Olivia St., and a light meal will be included. The agenda is slated to cover big items like recommending changing South Roosevelt Boulevard to one lane each way with a center turning lane; an overview of the fiscal year 2021-22 city budget, where budget workshops are starting this week; and a resolution instructing the city manager to work with members of the Frederick Douglass Black Educators Memorial Project to find an appropriate space in Bahama Village for a museum dedicated to honoring former teachers from The Douglass High School.
