A pub and four-star inn has temporarily closed its doors due to the financial pressures posed by Covid-19. The Sun Hotel, Coniston, announced on Sunday that it had decided to temporarily close until Cumbria exits tier two measures. Located beneath the Old Man of Coniston, the pub is a popular stop-off point for walkers and has been a firm fixture in the village for more than 400 years. In a statement, the Sun team said keeping the inn open would not be remotely viable and apologised for any disappointment caused. The statement read: “It’s with great reluctance that we have decided to close The Sun until we get out of tier two. ....

RESCUERS were called after a group of walkers became stranded while descending what they mistakenly thought was the Old Man of Coniston. The party of four males got stuck on a ledge while descending Great How, a prow of rocky ground more than a mile from the Old Man. A spokesman for Coniston Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT), which was called out at around 1.40pm on Saturday, said the group was noticed by a passing walker, who called the police for help. One of the party then managed to descend, but the other three saw how close he came to a big fall, and decided to stay put, said the spokesman. ....
