RESCUERS were called after a group of walkers became stranded while descending what they mistakenly thought was the Old Man of Coniston. The party of four males got 'stuck' on a ledge while descending Great How, a prow of rocky ground more than a mile from the Old Man. A spokesman for Coniston Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT), which was called out at around 1.40pm on Saturday, said the group was noticed by a passing walker, who called the police for help. "One of the party then managed to descend, but the other three saw how close he came to a big fall, and decided to stay put," said the spokesman.
