UHL overcrowding eases this week as A&Es continue to manage fallout from cyber attack

The level of overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick has dropped this week amid pleas from hospital management to only attend the Emergency Department if absolutely necessary.
The INMO reports this afternoon that there are 13 patients without a proper hospital bed at UHL, the highest figure since Monday but well down on the totals seen in recent months.
Nationally there are 117 people without a hospital bed as Emergency Departments continue to come to terms with the impact of the HSE cyber attack on its IT systems. ....

UHL Director of Medicine says cyber attack is having more of an impact than Covid on hospital system

Hospitals serving Tipperary are effectively back in the 1970s due to the impact of the cyber-attack on the HSE IT system.
Computers can’t be used so all patients are having to be dealt with using a paper trail which is leading to lengthy delays.
Clinical Director for Medicine at UHL Dr Alexander Fraser gave the example of a CT scan which would normally be available across the network.
“Now when we do a CT scan the only way to look at the CT is on the screen of the CT scanner itself. It’s not connected with anything.” ....

Hospital Emergency Departments are one of those most impacted by the attack on the Health Service Executive IT system.
Dr Gareth Quinn is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at University Hospital Limerick.
He says the ED has changed beyond recognition since last Friday’s cyber-attack.
“It’s only now we’re realising I think how reliant we are on IT to do the job. Our ED in Limerick is a very busy department with maybe 250 patients coming through every day.”
“We have an IT tracking system that allows us to keep track of those patients and we know who is in the department, where they are, whether they’ve been seen, how long they’ve been waiting, what doctor has seen them and whether a bed has been booked and so on. All of that is gone and we’re back to paper.” ....
